About the Domicile

Dome during remodeling, 2006

The Domicile is a geodesic dome home built on five acres of land in 1979. We purchased the Domicile from its second owner in April 2003. It needed quite a lot of TLC, and we're slowly making improvements.

This is one of the three domes of our house. Each dome is 25 foot high, and 30 foot across. There are second floors on the domes on each end of the house. Yes, second floors...and yes, you can stand up in them (except near the edges of the room).

In 2006, the local paper wrote an article on our house, which made the front page!

The Exterior

The domes are constructed of 6 inch foam triangles that were covered with concrete. In some places the concrete is 2 inches thick, and in others it is up to 6 inches thick.  The openings in the sides are wood framed and have regular siding on the outside. We have been working to replace the siding as we rebuild each wall. It was originally sided in pine was in need of being restained/replaced, and we're changing it to concrete fiberboard which (hopefully) we won't have to paint.

The Interior

There are currently four bedrooms, one of which is a loft, two bathrooms, a family room, kitchen, and living room.  The squarefootage on the house is somewhere between 2600 and 2800 feet. It's difficult to calculate the exact square footage. We have remodeled the kitchen and the secondary bathroom, and are working on the family room dome and the bedroom above it. We took out the wood stove that heated those sections of the dome and have put in radiant floor heat. All the interior remodeling is being done by us, with help from friends and family members along the way.
